Defining Culture

Culture is everything.

Trying to come up with a definition other than that is actually very hard because when you think about it, everything is a part of our culture. Anything from the clothes we wear to the music we listen to, the books we read to the things we say is our culture. It is whatever the current "social norm" is. It is the food we eat, the celebrations we have, and our family values; essentially everything that surrounds us.

Think about what your culture is like. Where you live, how you act, and the people that surround you all make up your culture. Now think about what the culture is like in countries half way around the globe. There are so many different cultures in our world. And the beautiful thing about culture is that each one is different from the last. No two cultures are the same and they all have something about them that is unique. They have their own music, food, clothes, traditions, and beliefs to separate them from other cultures. It's crazy when you think about it really, that all these cultures came from one.

What do you consider to be the defining qualities of culture? How would you define culture?

  1. Chloe, I agree with your statement on how you believe culture is everything. I see culture as a blend of the defining characteristics within a group of people. And starting from one culture, it has turned into many. I see it as an evolution where abstractions such as language, religion, and art where passed along with variation. Just as you said "no two cultures are the same."

  2. I totally agree that culture is everything and I wrote many similar claims in my blog. I believe that all individuals create their own view of what they believe culture is. Every event in our lives, both good and bad, molds the culture we have created for ourselves. Everyone's idea of culture is different and unique!

  3. Chloe, you did an excellent job describing all the aspects of culture. I believe culture consist of behaviors, beliefs, and all the day to day activities we participate in. Culture is largely based on each individual's unique perspective. Also, i couldn't agree more with "No two cultures are the same". Every culture has their own distinctive characteristics.

  4. Chloe, i like how you said "everything is a part of culture." that is an excellent point and one i completely agree with. when trying to define "everything" its better to relate "everything" to that of an individual, and what comprises an individuals everything from what they wear and do defines culture for that individual. good job!

  5. I definitely agree with your overall definition of culture. In fact, the majority of it aligns so well with my own personal definition. I believe that culture is everything- everything that makes up our lives, from things as simple as what we eat, to more complex things like what kinds of things we do to celebrate our culture. However, one thing I don't agree with is your statement "[Culture] is whatever the current "social norm" is." I believe that you are introduced to culture from the time you're brought into the world. With that being said, there may be somethings in one's culture that they learned in the past, yet they still practice that particular part of their culture today. And it may not necessarily be accepted by the society in which they live in.
